Please follow these Postal Service guidelines when installing a rural style mailbox on a post in front of your
home:
-
Placement: The bottom of the mailbox should be forty two (42) to forty eight (48)
inches above the ground. The front of the mailbox should be eight (8) inches behind the back
of the curb or back edge of shoulder.
-
Posts: Posts should be either 4 X 4 wood posts or a two (2) inch hollow steel
pipe. Railroad ties and concrete or brick supports are NOT acceptable since these are not
likely to break away in an accident.
Please check your mailbox before the first snowfall. Is your mailbox securely
attached to the post? Is the post free of rot and rust?
